The Yellow Ally is a variation on the Ally's Shrimp
and is tied almost exactly the same way. The only difference is in the
colours that are used. First tie in an Oval Silver tag as shown opposite.
|
| Next tie in a bunch of yellow bucktail for the tail extending
about a hook length. Another piece of Oval Silver is then tied in for the
ribbing followed by a length of Flat Silver tinsel for the rear half of
the body. |
|
|
Wind on the Flat Silver tinsel to approx half of the
body length and trim off the surplus. Do not include the head and wing
space when dividing the body into two halves. |
| Next tie in a length of Black Floss for the second half
of the body. Wind on the Black Floss and finish the body with open turns
of the silver ribbing. |
|
|
Turn the hook upside down in the vice and tie
in a bunch of Grey Squirrel tail for the beard. Make sure the white tips
extend beyond the bend of the hook, but only for this style of fly. Turn
the fly the right way up and tie in another bunch of Grey Squirrel tail
for the underwing, again extending fairly long.
|
| Select an appropriately sized Golden Pheasant tippet
feather and trim of the fluff from the stalk. Tie this in and lay evenly
across the top of the squirrel hair. When tying this fly on a big hook
a tippet feather could be tied on each side, as in classic fly wings. |
|
|
Finally tie in a yellow cock hackle with longish fibres.
Prepare the feather as shown in hints and tips
and wind on three or four turns. Complete by building up a nicely shaped
head and varnish black or yellow. |
