Young lad Duncan
lands a 7lb salmon
THE Brora produced a lovely 71b salmon for fourteen year-old Duncan MacKay from Helmsdale who was breaking in his new 15 foot 'Helmsdale rod'.
The fish came to a 3" Willie Gunn, what else, in Bengie. While on Brora and flys, there's a Waddington style called a 'Brora Shank' that was a great favourite in the 80's.
It is almost identical to a standard Waddington but is formed from very heavy wire (almost fence wire) and gives exceptional fishing depth to a fly.
Rob Wilson's Tackle Shop in Brora is the only place I've come across them. I tied up a few for my son a couple of years back and he is hardy in even trying to cast with them.
However they do get down and they work.
Tying a secure knot on them can be problematic owing to the thickness of the wire but running a swivel through the shank before tying the fly will give a better fixing for a blood knot and the fly can be a little more mobile because of it.
A heavy copper tube fly will have the same result but it's always another option if your passing through Brora.

THE Helmsdale produced four salmon last week, all of which were caught on the lower beats.
This is entirely due to the low temperatures inhibiting the salmon running.
The season's first one off the Club water fell to Calum Miller who grassed a 7lb sea-liced fish in the Flat Pool.
Calum had just come out of hospital the day before and thought to indulge in some therapeutic relaxation. Bet that made him feel 100 per cent better. Nice one Calum!

INVERNESS Angling Club Permits should be collected by this weekend if one is to avoid the £10 rejoining fee.
There are also places available for new and associate members.
Geddes Fishery is now ice free and fishing well. Gordon Grant from Inverness landed a cracker of 14lb and Martin Young from Forres one of 9lb 3oz. Inverness's Alex Elliot enjoyed a super day there on Sunday with 10 rainbows, the best of which weighed in at 7lb lloz.
Inverness Thistle Sea Angling Club is looking to increase its membership. Contact Arthur G Fraser on 01463 791118 or mobile 07967 821581
Membership is £10.00 and boat trips are £25.00.

REGRETTABLY I have to inform you of the closing of Stoneyfield Fishery, Tomich, by Invergordon.
Toxins have entered the three lochs and the fish kill has been total. Birds, frogs etc have all been victims and the likelihood of it ever re-opening is very slim at the moment.
I feel deeply sorry for John and Jennifer Connell who have put in so much time and effort over the last seven years to make it into a very successful and popular fishery. It will be sorely missed by the hundreds of anglers who visit there regularly.
