"Week ending Saturday April 28th 2001"

Moriston keeps up
its catches haul
THE River Moriston continued its run of good catches with another ten in the book last week.
On Monday, April 16 Denny MacKay accounted for a salmon of 9.5lb.
Denny also claimed a seatrout kelt of about 4lb which was duly released, both on a Rapala.
Glen Haddow grassed an identical brace at 11.5lb each, one on an ally's Shrimp, the other on a Devon minnow.
Donnie Urquhart finished off the day taking a salmon of 11.5lb on a Devon.
Tuesday saw another four on the bank with Donnie Urquhart back in action with another fine salmon of 11lb, again on a Devon.
Denny MacKay's Rapala added one of 9lb to his season's total.
Also, Gordie Kerr added to his with a similar 91b salmon, this one to a Toby.
John Nickson, also fishing a Rapala, had one of 1O.5lb to his credit and added an 11lb salmon on Wednesday which came to a Munro Killer.
On Saturday Denny MacKay grassed his third salmon of the week, at a solid 12lb - it also fancied that Rapala.
Three of those salmon caught were seal attack scarred.
Unfortunately there was nothing else of note on the rest of the Ness system.

THE Findhorn, despite good water levels, had a comparatively quiet week with only a handful being recorded from the beats and the Club water was surprisingly blank.

*

FURTHER north on the Kyle of Sutherland, the River Carron which has been doing exceptionally well of late, continued in the same vein last week bringing their spring total beyond the 150 mark.
Their conservation policy seems to be paying premium dividends!
The Oykel produced about forty with the Cassley adding thirteen or so to their tally.
So, not a bad week at all on the Kyle!
To date, this season, about 80 per cent of the salmon caught on the Carron have been released and as this has been the practice there for a number of years now perhaps those results are indicative and thought provoking.

THE Helmsdale fished better than of late with twenty five making the net on the beats and six from the Club water. The fish seem to be arriving in 'pockets' rather than in steady numbers at the moment, but that should soon sort itself out.

THE Halladale did eventually get back to fishing on Wednesday amid blizzard conditions with 70 mph gusts recorded on the gauge at the net store.
However it did get off the mark on Wednesday with Hamish Sutherland taking the season's first on a Temple Dog in MacBeath's on Beat 2.
At nine pounds it was still carrying sealice marks having only been in the river a couple of days at most. It wasn't until Friday that Ron MacKenzie got their second on a 2" Willie Gunn in the Run Out on Beat 3, that one was sealiced.
Tom Stitt got the third, also sealiced, on Saturday with a size 6 Ally's Shrimp in Fearaig on Beat 4, at 10lb it was the best of the week. Achintoul keeper Angus Ross had a brace, at 6lb and 7lb from Munro's on Beat 3, this time a General Practitioner (GP) his favoured pattern.
The second fish he returned and unfortunately he lost a third. Sandy Harper also lost contact with a salmon in Hugh's Pool. Despite the short week and arctic weather, not a bad start on the Halladale.
Incidentally all the fish caught were hooked at or around 2pm.

THE Thurso River has produced 57 springers since it re-opened three weeks ago on April 2, twenty one of which were taken last week.
The weather was more settled from Wednesday onwards and the river was at a fine height and salmon have been taken on every beat with the exception of Beat 6 which has hardly been fished.
John Bojda's was the most productive rod with three identical salmon of 11lb from Beats 2, 7 and 13. Tom Plumley and Alan Shearer shared three on Loch Beg on Saturday with Richard Elias taking a fine brace of nine pounders from the Weedy Pool on Beat 13.
All the fish taken were sea-liced and running hard for the upper reaches.

INVERNESS Angling club are to hold casting classes on the Little Isle Pool (at Bught Park) each Wednesday in May.
Those wishing to take part should be tackled up and ready to start at 7pm. There will be the usual experts on hand to deal with any angling related problems and the classes are not restrictive of age or ability. In fact it's a pleasant get together if nothing else! Hope to see you there (2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th).
Tarvie Lochs Troutmaster Final was held on Saturday, April 21 with 18 anglers competing. Davie Skinner and Hugh MacCorquodale tied for the first place both having three rainbows weighing 91b 6oz exactly.
However, Davie won out having the heaviest rainbow in the two baskets.
It weighed in at 5lb 11oz but Hugh's best was 5lb 7.5oz, a very close thing indeed. John MacNeil, who wasn't in the competition, had the best rainbow of the loch on Saturday, it weighed in at 6lb 7oz.
