Tying Gut Knots
Moisten the gut before forming the knot and then re-moisten before
pulling tight. This lubricates the line and helps the turns slip easily
and quickly into the desired position.

Hook eyes in failing light
In bad light or when eyesight is unequal to the task, it is helpful
to push the eye of the hook through a thin piece of white paper. This helps
to show up the aperture and keeps the wings and hackle out of the way.
When the knot is tied tear the paper to remove it.

Stuck Rod Ferrules
Carry with you a couple of pieces of thin sheet rubber, or elastic,
such as old bicycle inner tube cuttings. Wrapping these around each ferrule
will add enormously to your grip and enable you to separate the most stubborn
joints without damage to the rod.

Threading a Worm
Keep a little dry sand in your pocket, putting a little on finger
and thumb will greatly improve threading the worm. An especially lively
worm can be rendered temporarily docile by smacking between the palms of
the hands.

A Simple Eel Trap
Stuff an old sack with straw and tie the mouth round a short piece
of drain pipe, for the entrance. Put some bait amongst the straw such as
worms, dead fish or other attracter. Put a few big stones in it to keep
in position in the water, be sure to place the pipe opening down-stream.
|
Worn Carbon Ferrules
Rub down the male part of the ferrule very lightly with fine abrasive paper
to form a key. Make sure to do this evenly around and along the ferrule.
Do not rub too much as you may create hollows or bumps. Spray lightly and
evenly all around with liquid graphite spray which is available in aerosole
cans. |

Curried Maggots
If canal fishing is the most handy option for you. Try storing your maggots in curry
powder. It sounds stupid but it sends the chubb and roach crazy!

Sticky Eels
Put a stick (about 4 ft. long) in a muddy place in a pond so it is sticking out of the water
about 1 ft. out of the water, leave it over nite and it will probally have an eel wrapped
around it.
