| Heads: Leaving enough room for the wing and the head should be considered as soon as you start to tie a fly. Allocate a space for this purpose and do not let any uneccessary materials invade this space. When sizing up visualise a good sized head and then double it, remember the wing and hackle has to be tied here too. It's easier to get rid of extra space than to create more space if you are running short. |

Diagram 7
Wind the black floss evenly along the shank to form the second half of the body. Tie in the loose end underneath, at the space left for head, and trim. Important - remember to leave plenty of room for the wing and the head. |
| Diagram 8
Take the oval silver tinsel and wind on in an evenly spaced spiral as shown in Diagram 8. The number of turns you make will depend on the size of the hook chosen. On an average sized hook about six or seven turns is about right. |

Diagram 9
Turning the hook upside down in the vice, tie in a few grey squirrel tail hairs for a beard. This style of beard requires the hairs to extend further than normal, i.e. as shown or even longer. |
| Diagram 10
Turn the hook the right way up again and tie in a second bunch of grey squirrel tail hair. This is called the underwing and extends beyond the bend almost to half the length of the tail. |

Next we select a nice bright orange Golden Pheasant tippet feather. Take a large feather and strip of the sides at the base leaving the centre piece intact. Tie it in, on the long side, with a few turns of thread and then pull the feather through to the position shown and trim. |
| Diagram 12
Prepare an orange cock hackle and pull of the fluff at the base. Tie in at the head and pull the fibres forwards to double them in a V shape. Wind this round the hook three or four times and tie of drawing the fibres forwards to lie as shown. Finish off by forming a nicely shaped head and varnish red. |
