Body tip: When tying materials underneath the hook shank it is advisable to cut of all the ends at the same place. If you cut of the loose ends at different points along the shank, this provides for a very bumpy and uneven body. Follow the diagrams and see how to aviod steps and bumps in the bodies of your flies.

Step by step photographic lessons of the Ally's Shrimp are in my eBook

Diagram 1
Place a hook in the vice, catch in the thread at the eye and trim of the loose end. Wind the thread onto the hook shank, in fairly close turns, to the bend directly above the hook point. The object is to form a base of thread which helps prevent materials from slipping round to the side of the hook.
Diagram 2
Catch in a piece of oval silver tinsel underneath the hook shank and trim. The end underneath the shank should reach almost to the eye, but leaving a space free for the wing and the head. The thread should be wound as far as the barb point, this is the starting point for the tag.

Diagram 3
Wind on the oval silver tinsel in tight turns starting above the barb point and finishing above the hook point. Tie the finishing loose end of the tinsel underneath the hook and again trim off close to the eye.
Diagram 4
Tie in a another length of oval silver tinsel for the rib. Diagram 4 shows a short piece of tinsel to save on space. In fact you will need about twice the length shown.

Diagram 5
Select a bunch of hot orange bucktail making sure they are at least twice the length of the hook. Tie in as shown with the tail protruding back a full hook length. Tie in a length of bright red floss for the first half of the body.
Diagram 6
Wind the red floss evenly onto the hook to form the first half of the body and trim of the end. Then tie in a length of black floss for the second half of the body.

Bucktail tip: Remove, from the base of the bunch, all the fluff and short straggly hairs. Removing the fluff etc. keeps the volume of the body to a minimum. With Salmon flies huge fat bodies are unsightly. Another common mistake with hair is to tie in far too much, again adding to the volume of the hook.
